Sprouts Farmers Market is looking to hire 150 workers for a new West Hollywood store that opens next month.

  • 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 20

More stores are coming

The 25,000-square-foot West Hollywood store, at 8550 Santa Monica Blvd., is scheduled to open July 31. The Phoenix-based supermarket chain plans to open another location at 1302 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles on July 10. Additional markets will open Aug. 14 in Lake Forest and Aug. 28 in West Covina. Hiring information for those stores has not been revealed.

“California is an important state for Sprouts,” company spokesman Diego Romero said. “We’re continuing to expand across the state in new and existing communities. Whenever we open a new store we’ll have hundreds of people lined up at the doors.”

Sprouts has openings in West Hollywood for full- and part-time positions openings for experienced cashiers, grocery clerks, meat clerks and produce clerks, in addition to bakery clerks, bulk clerks and deli clerks.

What the jobs pay

The company didn’t reveal how much its workers are paid, but figures from Indeed.com show Sprouts cashiers in California average $13.11 an hour. Deli managers average $16.33, produce clerks average $11.66 and meat cutters average $13 an hour.

The company touts itself as a grocery chain that “appeals to everyday shoppers interested in fresh, natural and organic products at affordable prices.” Its stores offer fresh produce, meat and seafood. The stores also sell bulk foods, dairy and bakery items and a variety of vitamins and supplements. The mix includes more than 2,400 Sprouts-brand products.

The grocery chain offers employee discounts and career advancement opportunities. To learn more or to apply, visit sprouts.com/careers or call 1-866-925-2396.

A big Southern California footprint

Sprouts operates more than 300 stores in 19 states, including 120 in California, and the company employs 30,000-plus workers. Local stores can be found in such communities as Valencia, Woodland Hills, Burbank, Pasadena, Torrance, Upland, Riverside, Redlands, Claremont, Glendora, Diamond Bar, Orange and Irvine.

“Sprouts is very well positioned,” Burt Flickinger III, managing director for the retail consulting firm Strategic Resource Group, said recently. “They’ve been able to consistently grow in both Southern California and across the country while many traditional supermarket chains are struggling or contracting.”

Flickinger attributes the company’s success to low prices and a strong management team. Jim Nielsen, Sprouts’ interim co-CEO, president and chief operating officer, is “a tremendous leader,” he said, and other members of the team have 25 to 35 years experience in the industry.

“When we did pricing surveys for the exact same product, Sprouts was 10 to 15 percent lower than Whole Foods,” he said. “That could save a family of five in Southern California $700 to $800 a year. And close to 50 percent of their business is in produce — that’s the fastest growing segment in retail.”
